About This Station
The station is powered by a LaCrosse WS2307 weather station. The data is collected every 60 seconds and the site is updated every 5 minutes. This site and its data is managed using Weather Display Software. The station comprises an anemometer, rain gauge and a thermo-hygro sensor situated in my back garden, feeding data to a dedicated PC I built from old bits I had lying around. This PC runs the Weather Display software 24/7, FTPing data to this site. I was tempted to install Mandrake Linux on this PC, but Weather Display support for Linux is not at the same level as for Windows, so it runs Windows XP Pro, enabling administration by Remote Desktop from my main everyday PC.
Station location is at 050:33:05N, 0003:35:13W, 68m above Ordnance datum, Newlyn.Coming soon
About Kingsteignton
Founded in the early eighth century as the centre of a vast Saxon estate between Teignmouth and Manaton, Kingsteignton was a key settlement providing resources for Danish raiders who invaded in 1001.
Medieval prosperity funded the rebuilding of the parish church in the 15th Century, its 85 foot tower being constructed in the 1480s. From the medieval period to the mid-19th Century the parish church held an important position as the mother church of Highweek and Newton Bushell.
The Fairwater Leat, fed by the springs at Rydon, superseded the Honeywell Spring as the established water supply in the Middle Ages. A drought is said to have given rise to the annual Ram Roasting fair. With insufficient water to baptise a child, a ram was sacrificed to the gods of the local spring. Water sprang forth and a ram has been roasted ever since at the fair, held each Whit Monday.
In 1509 the Manor of Kingsteignton, which had been a crown demesne until the 13th century, passed into the hands of the Clifford family who still hold the title of Lord of the Manor.
Modern Kingsteignton has a population of over 11,000, more than many towns in Devon, and is reputedly the largest village in the UK. Expansion in the late twentieth century meant that Kingsteignton is now effectively merged with Newton Abbot, the former industrial area between the two now being occupied by modern retail outlets. Until the mid 1970s, the main A380 Exeter-Torquay trunk road ran through the centre of the village. The main road now skirts round to the east of the village and crosses the River Teign estuary to the south on a large viaduct.
The climate is typical of the south west, with hot summers, fairly mild winters, but above average rainfall, brought on by the proximity of Dartmoor to the north west.
About This Website
This site is an offshoot of my personal website. Weather data has been recorded reliably since February 2007, but the upgrade to the current version took place during October 2007. Unfortunately, data transfer from the old software did not go well, so data from before October 2007 should be ignored.
